November 2009 Minister's Message
Created on Sunday, 01 November 2009 11:49
Dear Friends,
I read a poem recently called 'Dressing up'
Tin helmets, fedoras,
bowlers and caps
I can be who I want
At the drop of a hat.
(Steve Turner)
We have all probably used the phrase 'with this hat on' and we don't usually mean real hats but that in a certain role or responsibility we would say or do a certain thing. There is never a dull moment at Cornerstone and roles and responsibilities are shared widely across the congregation which is a great thing. It is not always easy, however, to meet peoples expectations regarding your roles. In my letter last month I wrote "Success is acquiring God's values as my own" and I believe that we should always remember that what is of eternal value and importance is who we really are in Christ. This is not always discovered through our roles in life but through God revealing himself to us.
Perhaps in the month ahead we could all step out of our expected roles now and then and surprise others (and ourselves) by simple spontaneous acts of service and generosity. Don't worry, the church will not collapse for we know it is God's prized possession. Let us be led by the Spirit as we encourage one another in new and exciting ways. The Bible says "It was for freedom that Christ has set us free" and that freedom is the best thing I have ever experienced in my life.
And finally - just to see who is reading this letter the first person to tell me where the above Bible verse comes from will win a prize (Admin and production staff excluded from this competition!).
Yours in Christ
Eddie
