April 2010 Minister's Message

Cornerstone: Hythe United Reformed Church PrintE-mail

Dear Friends,

Last autumn I spent a few days at Lee Abbey in Devon on a course. In the grounds of the conference centre at the top of a steep slope running up to the cliff-top are three very large crosses. Whenever I went outside I could see the largest cross but from a different angle and the walk up to it was a challenge. As I write this letter I am thinking that there were tens of thousands of people crucified during Roman times but only one is spoken of today. The path of Jesus to the cross was a hard journey and he calls us to follow him (and take up our own cross). The message of the cross may seem foolish to many today and even to those who believe there is a sense of mystery and wonder. I read a little booklet once ‘the cross in your pocket” and I challenge myself to think about what God has done for us in Jesus at least once a day if I can.

There are lots of opportunities this Easter to encounter the risen Lord Jesus, services from palm Sunday through Holy week, to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and through into Resurrection day itself. This year for some of us will be a bit different as we take a group from the church to Spring Harvest. I am sure people will return fired up in their faith and with lots to share.

On April 12th I begin my three month Sabbatical. I will not be working at Cornerstone during this time but will be engaging in some other activities, and work which I hope will refresh me in my faith and ministry for the future. I am grateful to those who have offered some support so that we will be able to visit Kosova as a family in May with Smile International. I will be distributing a prayer card nearer the time to let you know in more detail what I will be up to. There is strong and well organized leadership and I know things will thrive in my absence. If you need help or advice please ask at the office or speak to any of the Elders or Team Leaders, especially Terry, Joan or Joy our Church Secretary, Pastoral Secretary and Administrator respectively. I also know that you will be continuing to support Alison, Martha, Jake and Sam as they continue to be involved here while I am not.

What a wonderful celebration evening (AGM) we shared in recently and we must continue to be thankful to our faithful God who loves us and all people and who in Jesus is our Saviour.

With best wishes for Easter and for the month ahead.

Yours in Christ,

Eddie
