History of Cornerstone

Cornerstone: Hythe United Reformed Church PrintE-mail

  • 1797 a house was opened for worship as a mission outpost of Southampton's Above Bar Congregational Church.
  • 1798 a chapel was opened to house the growing congregation.
  • 1812 a Sunday School opened which grew from 21 to 81 scholars by the end of the year.
  • 1839 the church joined the Congregational Union of England and Wales.
All this was overseen from Above Bar, with people travelling by water from Southampton to Hythe.
  • 1844 Hythe had it's first regular and resident preacher.
  • 1845 a large chapel was opened in Hythe known as Ebenezer Chapel (which still stands today, although no longer a place of worship)
  • 1914 the foundation stone (or "cornerstone") of the existing building was laid.
  • 1964 the church building was extended.
  • 1967 a hall was added to the rear.
  • 1972 the church joined the URC

 

  • 2007 a major internal and external reburishment,rebuilt hall and extended worship area.
  • 15th July 2007 - first service in 'Cornerstone' Church.
  • 15th September 2007 - rededication of Cornerstone and induction of Eddie Boon as Minister
